Why A Vacation By Rail or Road Can Be Cheaper And Recharge You

July 10, 2019 by Lucinda Honeycutt

When considering travel across the US, many opt for a flight. They can take you across the country in a few hours. We have become a society a little lost in the “fast food” convenience of everything right now. Vacations are relaxing and recharging. It’s hard to do that when dealing with changing airlines and missing connections. Flights aren’t always the most comfortable either. Let’s take a minute and slow down. Enjoy the scenery when you travel by road or by rail. Here are some ways to make it more affordable and enjoyable.

Forgotten Railroads

With airlines, many have forgotten the railways as a viable mode of travel. One of the most affordable ways to travel by train is the coast to coast ride. It covers 3,000 miles within 3 nights without stopping. At around $250, it’s a fantastic way to enjoy the scenic views of our country. It’s not something you can view from 30,000 feet. While you can get up and walk inside of an airplane, you have some limitations. On the railroad, you will have more options for walking around. You can head to the bar, lounge, or dining car. The sleeping cars are comfortable and showering is easy. You can also talk to other passengers, rather than your row mate in the plane. Engaging with others is a wonderful way to enjoy your travels.

Roadways Are Still An Option

Traveling on the road is a wonderful way to travel afar and see the scenic views of new states. If you decide to take your car, I recommend you take the back roads as much as possible. Highways are wonderful but the views can be boring. You will also find more traffic jams on the highways.

Road trips are more in your control. You decide when to stop for food. You decide when to take that overdue potty-break. If you find something that piques your interest, you can stop. If you own a fuel-efficient vehicle, gas will be more affordable than traveling by airline.

Eating is easy if you pack a cooler and make some snacks for the ride. Pack your tent and you can find a campground anywhere, saving money on a hotel room.

Why Slowing Down Is Important

As I stated before, vacations are for you to relax and recharge. Eliminating a lot of hustle and bustle from your usual routine, allows you to reflect. You can think about where you are mentally.

You can nurture your relationships with others. You can work out ideas on how to fix an area in your life. Aside from introspecting, you can meet lots of interesting people along the way. You might strike up a conversation with someone visiting the country. You could learn more about the area from a waitress at a hole-in-the-wall diner. The US is full of different cultures and we can learn a lot from them.

Road and rail trips also give you the chance to try something new. You might find a zip line that you give a shot. Traveling by train is not common for some people, that in itself could be your something new. Traveling by road or rail will earn you the best stories to share at family and friend get-togethers. Who wouldn’t want to share some awesome stories?
