Airplane Passenger Etiquette

April 14, 2018 by Susan Paige

If there’s one unwritten law in life that’s both irrefutable and universal, it’s that nobody wants to be in the same confined space with an inconsiderate person.

But we can’t always just assume that these people are inconsiderate intentionally. People aren’t as bad as you might think and on an important note, the majority of the public are decent people. Though this may vary from place to place, the majority of people are indeed capable of decency.

Sometimes, this inconsiderate behavior is just a matter of plain ignorance. Not everybody may be well-versed in the ways of the world. And sometimes, we may be inconsiderate of others without even knowing it.

The key here is knowledge.

Not all the rules are laid out before you. Sometimes, society just assumes that you should know these rules by now. And that isn’t exactly fair to those who haven’t been exposed to certain situations.

Now, traveling by plane is one of the quickest ways to get from point A to point B. A few hours in the same seat can easily become a nightmare if you find yourself next to someone who’s inconsiderate. Sometimes, you could be the offender. Here are a few etiquette points that you might be overlooking.

Pack Your Things Properly

Now, the overhead compartment has very limited space. You have to consider that there are other passengers who would like to store their hand-carried possessions there. You don’t want to hog the space that could have been meant for other passengers. If possible, make sure that you store your bag vertically.

Switch Your Phone to Airplane Mode

For first-time flyers, this could seem like an inconsequential matter. But when flight attendants ask you to switch to airplane mode, you need to do so. Your phone’s cellular connection could interfere with communications between the pilots and the air tower. The takeoff and landing process requires precision and for that to happen, there must be constant communication. Avoid an accident. Put your phone in airplane mode.

Yield Your Armrest to the Middle Passenger

Another rule that’s commonly broken involves the armrests. Middle passengers don’t have the same area of space as those seated at the sides. To assuage a sense of fairness, both side passengers should yield both armrests to the middle passenger. Don’t be that person who hogs armrests. Yield.

Claim Your Baggage Properly

Now that you’re out of the plane, all that’s left is to claim your baggage in an orderly fashion. Never cross the line that’s indicated at the claiming area. Don’t try to squeeze into crowds and if someone’s baggage comes before yours, yield to that person. This ensures that everybody gets their baggage without the stressful ordeal of battling for it like Neanderthals would for a piece of meat.
