Why the MG ZS Is the Ultimate Family SUV

November 8, 2021 by Susan Paige

The problem with SUVs is that they’re more expensive than hatchbacks, but the MG ZS has changed that because it is more affordable than the Renault Clio or Ford Fiesta. The MG ZS comes with a choice of two petrol engines – a naturally aspirated 1.5 VTi-Tech and a turbocharged 1.0T GDI. The smaller engine is the most powerful one out of the two and comes with a standard automatic gearbox, while the 1.5 engine comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The MG ZS fits into the category of family SUV no matter which power option you go for and is an excellent bargain option. So, do you get what you pay for with the MG ZS? We have consulted with our experts to give you a quick review of the MG ZS, which will cover everything from the drive to the interior, its cargo space, and how much it costs to run. Let’s begin.

Performance and Drive

The MG ZS has more precise and meatier steering with better cornering grip, and the body leans less when you go into corners. The MG ZS starts to struggle with comfort because the ride is unsettled as you speed up, which makes the driving experience tiring.

The 1.0T GDI engine is our preferred choice because the turbo gives stronger acceleration, while the 1.5 VTi-Tech feels underpowered, even when you floor it. You get a 5-speed manual gearbox with the 1.5VTi-Tech, which is pleasant due to the short throw between the gears.

Interior

The MG ZS shines in interior quality, especially when you consider its budget price tag. The dashboard has soft-touch plastics with solid-feeling buttons and an impressive fit and finish. It’s classier than many of its rivals, and you also have a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It offers crisp graphics and is easy to control.

The infotainment system contains Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring to use your phone’s apps on the touchscreen. There is Bluetooth connectivity and DAB radio on all trim levels. If you upgrade to the Exclusive trim, you will also get a built-in sat-nav, a 360-degree parking camera, and an improved six-speaker stereo system.

Passenger and Boot Space

One of the best things about the MG ZS is its roomy interior, and the space upfront is on par with some of the most expensive SUVs in its class. There is plenty of head and legroom for passengers and drivers, and it’s excellent in the rear and offers more space than the most spacious family SUVs on the market.

The boot space is decent, and you can fit plenty in there. There are 60/40 folding rear seats and a height-adjustable boot floor as standard as well.

Costs and Verdict

The MG ZS’s standard seven-year warranty for 80,000 miles makes the car an irresistible option, especially its low pricing. This car is an affordable option for many people, thanks to its list price, which is way below its competitors. The MG ZS is well equipped as it offers cruise control with a speed limiter, air conditioning, LED headlights in Excite models, and an infotainment touchscreen.

The exclusive trim adds rain-sensing wipers, a fully digital drivers display, and leather-style upholstery. The MG ZS doesn’t have an impressive safety rating, as it only scored three out of five stars when EURO NCAP tested it in 2017. There isn’t automatic emergency braking, which is disappointing, and the MG ZS performed badly when it comes to chest protection for adults sitting in the back and child safety.
