While nighttime can offer peace and quiet, it also presents unique risks, especially when you’re alone. Certain activities that seem harmless during the day can become far more dangerous after dark due to reduced visibility, fewer people around, and heightened vulnerabilities. Whether you’re running errands or simply unwinding outdoors, knowing which situations to avoid can help protect your safety. Here are six things you should never do alone after dark.

1. Walking in Isolated Areas

Walking alone in secluded streets, parks, or trails increases the risk of encountering potential threats without immediate assistance. Darkness makes it harder to see hazards, and with fewer people around, there’s a greater chance of encountering someone with bad intentions. If you must walk somewhere at night, stick to well-lit areas, remain aware of your surroundings, and consider using safety tools like a personal alarm.

2. Using ATM Machines in Empty Locations

ATMs in isolated spots or dimly lit areas pose significant safety risks at night. Criminals often target lone individuals withdrawing cash, taking advantage of the element of surprise. If you need to use an ATM after dark, choose one in a well-lit, busy location such as a bank branch or grocery store, and be aware of anyone lingering nearby.

3. Getting into Rideshares or Taxis Without Verifying the Driver

Jumping into a rideshare or taxi without confirming the driver’s identity can put you in a dangerous situation. There have been reported cases of individuals impersonating drivers to lure unsuspecting passengers. Always check the license plate, match it with the app, and ensure the driver’s information aligns with what was provided. Sharing your ride details with a friend adds another layer of protection.

4. Stopping for Stranded Vehicles or Hitchhikers

While helping others in distress is admirable, stopping for stranded vehicles or hitchhikers at night can be risky. You can’t always verify the intentions of someone asking for help, and unfortunately, some use this tactic to lure victims into dangerous situations. If you witness someone in need, consider calling for roadside assistance or law enforcement rather than putting yourself at risk by stopping alone.

5. Exploring Empty Parking Garages or Lots

Parking garages and lots become high-risk locations at night due to poor visibility and limited security. They are common sites for stalking and other crimes because they provide isolated hiding spots. If you must park in a garage at night, choose a well-lit area near exits, keep your keys ready, and stay alert to your surroundings. If anything seems off, return to a safer area until you feel secure.

6. Engaging in Loud or Distracting Activities

Listening to loud music with headphones, talking on the phone, or being deeply focused on an activity while outside at night can prevent you from noticing danger. Distractions lower your awareness of your surroundings, making it easier for someone to approach unnoticed. Staying attentive and minimizing distractions ensures you react quickly if a situation requires immediate action.

Staying Safe Without Fear

While you shouldn’t live in constant fear, being cautious about certain activities at night can make a significant difference in protecting yourself. Awareness, preparation, and trusting your instincts are key to avoiding risky situations when you’re alone after dark. Prioritizing safety doesn’t mean avoiding life—it simply means taking steps to ensure you can navigate the night with confidence.
