How Do You Treat Hormonal Hair Loss?

by Susan Paigeon September 19, 2022 ~ Leave a Comment

Hormonal changes in your body can make things difficult, causing both physical and sometimes emotional discomfort. You might notice a fluctuation in your body’s temperature, acne breakouts, mood swings, lethargy, changes in appetite, and in some cases, you might start losing your hair. The latter can be a very upsetting hormonal change as this can drastically change your appearance and make you feel more self-conscious. Women going through menopause or people who are experiencing other big hormonal changes due to medications or other health conditions might face this problem and wonder what they can do about it, and below are some suggestions.

Topical Treatments

One method you might want to try if you’re suffering from hormonal hair loss is topical solutions such as shampoos, conditioners, and other creams. Your doctor might be able to prescribe these treatments for you, so always ask them about this option if you are getting upset over your hair loss. Alternatively, you can buy lotions and shampoos containing minoxidil over the counter, and these are recommended to promote hair regrowth and thickness.

Hair Transplant

Another option you can explore is a hair transplant procedure. This can be an ideal option for those who have significant hair loss due to hormonal issues and is a long-lasting solution which is why it is a popular choice. It might take a few months for you to start seeing the full results from your hair transplant, but it can help you regain a full head of hair and feel more comfortable with your appearance. Hormone Therapy Treatments

Depending on the circumstances, you might find that having hormone therapy treatments can help slow your hair loss and even give your hair the chance to grow back. You will need to speak to your doctor about this to make sure that hormone therapies are the right action for your circumstances, as they may interfere with other treatments you’re having. Some women going through menopause might receive hormone therapies already to help them manage some of the other symptoms that are making them uncomfortable or those dealing with other conditions that can create hormone imbalance.

Changes to Hair Care Routine

You might want to think about making some changes to your general hair care routine. Although this won’t stop the hormonal effects on your hair, it can help to reduce the stress on your hair that might be speeding up hair loss. For example, reducing how much heat you apply to your hair when styling it can dry it out and make it brittle. Avoiding dying your hair and brushing it when wet can also reduce hair loss.

Losing your hair is never a pleasant experience, especially not when you are already coping with other symptoms of hormonal imbalance. This does not mean that your hair will never grow back, and there aren’t solutions. However, some of the suggestions above are all good places to start. If you or someone else you know is facing hormonal hair loss, talk them through some of these ideas and see what could work for them.
